NEW YORK, NY— Parasol Projects is proud to present its latest group exhibition featuring artists of the past forty years, who have worked, lived and inspired the city’s creative epicenter. Downtown will run through the entire month of April, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 4th from 6-9pm.

Featured artists include Andrew Poneros, Andy Warhol, Bob Gruen, Charles Lahti, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Christopher Wool, Cristian Mejia, Johnny Rozsa, Kevin Baker, Lesny JN Felix, Marcos Chin, Maripol, PJ Linden (Wonderpuss Octopus), Santiago Felipe and Scooter LaForge.

Downtown is a local examination between two generations of artists who are brought together by way of their lineage from downtown Manhattan. From Andy Warhol’s ‘Factory’ in Union Square, and Christopher Wool’s studio in Chinatown, to Lesny JN Felix in neighboring Lower East Side, a common thread has drawn this wide-ranging group of artists to be inspired by and create from their surroundings. Despite the gap in age, social circumstances or pedigree, the two schools of artists both adopt a candid vocabulary that reflects upon the eccentricities of their shared geographies. The exhibit includes a variety of media such as painting, photography, screen print, and more.

About the artist

Layla Love has spent the last decade traveling around the globe exploring the spectrum of life from orphanages to royal palaces, seeking beauty and inspiration through photography. She believes art loses its ego when paired with purpose, thereby contributing to philanthropic causes while working at grassroots levels to support evolution through art. Love’s work has been showcased in over 100 locations including the White House, Paris Photo and MOMA sponsored AiPAD with Eric Franck Fine Arts. This season her art will be included in showcases in Egypt, Basel Miami, & New York.

Love takes pride in the highest quality work and has developed traditional darkroom techniques paired with an understanding of cutting edge technology, yielding hand-printed iridescent photographs in limited editions. These images are displayed in prestigious locations worldwide, including Harrod’s of London, over forty Tiffany & Co. diamond showrooms, and have been showcased alongside an array of artists including Kara Walker, Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, and Henri Cartier Bresson.

Bak’tun 13

PRESENTED BY (re:)FORM art

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, October 25th, 7-10 pm
Featured Artists: Mike Berlant, Anna Harrah, Jon Lee, Anna Rockwell, Amy Mathis, Annie Ryerson

A death is a prelude to a rebirth, destruction signals renewal, and as one era passes, another one begins. According to Mayan cosmology, this fall marks the end of the 12th bak’tun, or great cycle. For some it is an occasion to signify impending catastrophe. The artists in this show, however, would rather reflect on the esoteric truths of extinct philosophies as well as the phenomena of apocalyptic thinking in contemporary society. Instead of lamenting the inevitable end to our known way of life, we welcome the coming of Bak’tun 13 as a harbinger to a new mode of thinking in the art world and in American culture.

(re:)FORM Art is a curatorial project whose mission is to bring experimental artists together to formulate new modes of discourse about art and social change.

Art Fag City at The L Magazine: This Week’s Must-See Art Events and Openings

For the last few years, the London-based artist who goes by the name Slinkachu has been crafting and photographing remarkably detailed, trippy and sometimes quite moving miniature tableaux on the streets of cities all over the world. Using plastic train-set figures — some of them cut up and glued back together in specific poses, or accented with modeling clay and then painted — Slinkachu creates tiny scenarios that, seen from afar, are almost unrecognizable, but when viewed up-close unveil an almost-hidden alternate reality.
